Yoga means meditation. It is one of the six traditional darśanas (“mirrors”) in which one sees the true nature of the Self: clear, joyful and transcendent.
Iyengar Yoga uses the finite body-mind as a doorway into this inner sanctuary.
As part of this process, students are taught to be “in the present moment” during class. It can be challenging to cultivate a meditative consciousness and also deeply nourishing. As my teacher often says, “when the mind is present inside the body, that is a spiritual practice.”
All bodies are finite and, therefore, subject to limitations (ie, general stiffness, joint issues, etc). Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers are skilled at encouraging students to go beyond their perceived limitations and also adept at providing general adaptations to the postures being taught or alternative options when needed.
If you are unsure which class is the best fit for you please send an email to holly@yogawithholly.com.
Attending class twice per week is most beneficial and highly suggested, although not always possible.
Home practice is essential to progress…fifteen minutes a day can make a big difference in the quality of your outer and inner life. We have resources (link to that will encourage and inspire you to make Yoga a part of your daily life.
If this is what you are seeking, we are here to share with you what we have learned from Yoga and all that Yoga has to teach you.
In Peace,
Holly

Class Descriptions
Advanced
For students with substantial Iyengar Yoga experience who can do Sirsasana with intelligence for five minutes, who can kick up into Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Full Arm Balance) and Pincha Mayurasana, and push up into Urdhva Dhanurasana (Upward Bow) or are progressing in that direction. Sirsasana is taught away from the wall and variations are introduced. Independent practice should be well established.
Beginner
This class is for those who are new to Yoga or the Iyengar method. The focus is on standing poses, arm work and seated poses. Forward bending, twisting and back bending are introduced. Students are introduced to their bodies and taught how to relax deeply.
Continuing Beginner
For students who have completed several sessions at the Beginner level or are new to the Iyengar method but have prior experience. Prone back bendings, basic abdominal asanas are introduced and new forward extensions and twists are added. Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) and Halasana are learned in a progressive manner.
Dhyana Yoga
Set the tone for your week with a Monday morning meditation. Practices will include focused and open awareness (stilling the vrttis), intention setting, and the cultivation of benevolent and non-judgmental states of mind. Beginners as well as experienced meditators are welcome.
Gentle/Restorative
This class is focused on building strength and flexibility in all the right places for those bodies experiencing the effects of age and gravity. It is also appropriate for students of any age who need a slower-paced class and those recovering from injury/illness.
Intermediate
For students who are ready to deepen their already established Yoga practice. Students have been well prepared to learn Sirsasana (Headstand) and variations in Salamba Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) are introduced.
Yoga For Healing
All Yoga is therapeutic. Its practice gives back health and happiness (sukha) to the body and mind and brings about contentment (santosha). It is not medical treatment but can provide the student with knowledge about how to (at least) manage and (at best) heal from the source of the pain (dukha) being experienced by the body-mind. Individualized sequencing, use of props, timing while in the specific postures and assistance by highly-trained teachers and apprentices unify to create a holistic treatment, unique to each individual. The maximum number of students in the classroom at any time is limited to ensure personal attention and assistance as the student practices.
