The Sun and the Moon: Yoga for a Tranquil Mind

Online, Saturdays in March

“The pure waters of a lake reflect the beauty around it and one can also see right through the clear water to the bottom. Similarly a pure mind can reflect the beauty in the world around it, and when the mind is still, the beauty of the [Soul], is seen reflected in it.” – B.K.S. Iyengar, Light on Life

Within us there is a place of infinite space and profound peace that remains untouched by the conditions that surround us. This is the Sun, the Soul. Through the study and practice of Yoga we discover how to employ the body-mind, the Moon, to seek and find the inner source of eternal joy.

In this series of classes we will learn:

  • how the skillful practice of asana and pranayama support us in cultivating equanimity
  • specific sequences to balance both overactive, anxious and dull/melancholic states of being
  • key, philosophical concepts from the traditional texts that unlock the door to the heart of all that Yoga has to offer

Practice: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM ET

Theory: 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM ET

Learning and Loving Inversions (Viparita Sthiti)

with Holly Kostura, Senior Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and author of “Your Year of Yoga: Learning to Love Practice”

“The asana must be sensitively grafted onto the body.” – B.K.S. Iyengar

This four-part series of classes will weave theoretical study and practical application into a sequential and holistic practice that aims the body-mind in the direction of the targeted postures.

Some basic anatomy and physiology will be studied with the goal of enhancing the students understanding of the primary actions required to, as B.K.S. Iyengar writes, sensitively graft the pose onto the body!

Timings for each of the classes are as follows. Students are welcome to attend as their schedule allows:

1:00 PM – 2:45 PM: An optional study session in which we will learn…

  • basic anatomy and physiology of the foundation upon which these two poses are built: the arms, upper back, shoulders and neck
  • how and why their practice has a nourishing, calming effect on the body-mind
  • yogic philosophy to help your whole being inner and outer, RISE UP!

3:00 PM – 4:30 PM: A focused asana class devoted to learning and loving Sarvangasana (Shoulderstand) and Halasana (Plough Pose). Modifications and alternatives will be taught for those experiencing menstruation, stiffness, low back, neck and shoulder issues.

4:30 PM – 5:00 PM: A time to ask questions and seek to find answers:-)
